Rockwall Real Estate Information

The county seat of Rockwall County, the smallest county in the state, Rockwall, Texas, is also one of the county's largest cities. It makes up an area of just under 23 square miles and is experiencing tremendous growth, as its population has nearly doubled in just eight years to more than 35,000, as of 2008 estimates. It is about 20 miles east of downtown Dallas, right on Interstate 30 and on the east shore Lake Ray Hubbard.

The city, which was originally inhabited by Caddo Native Americans, gets it name from an underground rock wall-like formation that was discovered there by settlers in the 1800s. Rockwall was founded in 1854 and in 1873, it became the county seat of Rockwall County. As for real estate in Rockwall, most properties here have a high value, one that has increased by a third over less than 10 years. Median house and condo values in 2000 were just over $150,000, while by 2007 those figures had risen to more than $200,000. Median household income here was around $80,000 in 2007.

The city is served by the Rockwall Independent School District, and it is the home of the Higher Education Center at Rockwall, a part of the Collin County Community College District, where a few area colleges offer courses. Two private schools, Heritage Christian Academy and Country Day Montessori School, operate as well. The city is home to the Dallas Diesel, a football team in the North American Football League, and it maintains around 330 acres of parkland and open space, two community pools and three golf courses. In addition, Lake Ray Hubbard provides Rockwall with such additional perks as four marinas, three public boat ramps and a yacht club.

Founders Day is held on the historic square downtown each spring, fall holds the annual Rockin’ On The Docks, and there is a a Concert by the Lake series that runs through spring and summer every year, with performances each Thursday night at the Harbor Amphitheater. Community groups include the the Lakeside Singers, the Hubbard Chamber Music Series and The Rockwall Community Playhouse.
