The city was first occupied in 1852 and it was called French Settlement, after a family with the last name French who lived there. In 1881, however, the community was more formally adopted and it chose instead the name Garza. In 1929, after Lake Dallas was finished, the community decided to rename the town Lake Dallas after the lake, and it was formally incorporated in 1965. It was mostly a sparsely populated resort area on the shores of the lake, but in recent years it has become a more popular destination for those in search of residential properties in the area. Residents in Lake Dallas had a median household annual income estimated in 2007 to be more than $63,000. As for real estate, the average house or condo value in 2007 was estimated to be nearly $144,000.
