University Park sits on almost four square miles. It was started in 1915 as a group of homes surrounding the just-established university to serve professors and staff. In 1924, after being denied attempts to annex into either Dallas or Highland Park, the city incorporated on its own. Today the community is home to a wealthy population, with high-value real estate and desirable homes. The median household income for University Park residents was estimated at more than $150,000 in 2007. There is a wide array of properties available, with an estimated 8,600 homes.

Children of residents in University Park are assigned to the Highland Park Independent School District. The schools serving the population include two elementary schools within University Park, two elementary schools in Highland Park, an intermediate, middle and high school, all located between the two communities. Dallas is just five miles south of here, and residents are served by the University Park Public Library.

Residents here are highly educated, with 72 percent of those here over the age of 25 estimated to have college degrees. The city operates 10 parks, the University Park Swimming Pool & Sprayground and six double tennis courts. Annual events include the Goar Park Eggstravaganza Easter egg hunt, June's Children’s Fishing Derby in the pond at Caruth Park, the Park Cities Parade and Picnic and the University Park Firecracker Fun Run in July, and summer's Dive-In Movies at Curtis Park Pool.
