Murphy Real Estate Information

A mid-sized community, and one of the larger cities in Collin County, Murphy, Texas, lies in the northeastern part of the state and is a suburban community, only about 20 miles from Dallas and 30 miles from the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. As Collin County is one of the fastest growing communities in the country, Murphy has experienced a great boom in its population in recent years. At the time of the 2000 census, the city was home to a population of just 3,100; by 2008, estimates showed that figure had risen to nearly 18,000, giving the city some of the highest growth rates in the county.

The community lies in the southern portion of the county, midway between Plano and Wylie and just south of the Southfork Ranch. It makes up an area of just under four square miles. Income is steadily rising in Murphy, as are real estate values. At 2000, the annual household income for a city resident was just under $84,000, and the estimated average value of properties in Murphy in 2007 was more than $220,000. The area was first settled in 1846 and it was named Murphy in 1888, after William Murphy, the man who donated the land that was used for the railroad tracks and the depot of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway that passed through town.

Residents of Murphy are primarily served by two public school districts: the Plano Independent School District and the Wylie Independent School District. Plano includes three elementary, two middle and two high schools, while Wylie includes two elementary schools, an intermediate , junior high and high school. The oldest structure in town still in use is the First Baptist Church of Murphy, built in 1901.
