A burgeoning community in Collin County, the city of Lucas, Texas, is an affluent suburb of the Dallas, Texas, area, located about 30 miles north of the downtown of the city. It was measured to have a population of just under 3,000 at the time of the 2000 census, but since then it has grown quite a bit, with recent figures showing the population now at more than 5,000. The city makes up an area of just under 12 square miles, including parts of Lavon Lake located in the community. The city tends to have real estate values above average and its residents are quite wealthy, with the median income for a household in 2000 at more than $100,000. The city has a low population density of just 435 people per square mile.

In recent years, the city has grown as its beautiful lakeside properties have been discovered by those looking for homes outside of the Dallas area. The estimated value for a house or condo in 2007 here was more than $260,000. There are two parks on the lake's shores: Highland Park and Brockdale Park. Other parks in the community, but not on the lake, include Forest Creek Park, Lucas Community Park and part of the Trinity Trails. There is also a nine-mile equestrian trail for those who enjoy horseback riding.

Parents who are interested in the Lucas area will find their children zoned to one of six school districts in the area: Lovejoy, Allen, McKinney, Plano, Princeton and Wylie independent school districts. One draw of Lucas is its location; the community offers quick access to many major highways and thoroughfares, including Central Expressway, President George Bush Freeway, and State Highway 121. The most popular industries for residents of Lucas to find employment in include education, computer and electronic products and professional, technical and scientific services. Teachers and engineers are the most common occupation. The nearest hospital is just three miles away in McKinney, and for higher education, the University of Dallas and a Collin County community college campus are just 10 miles away.
